This day in tech history

Computer arcade gaming was “born”.

40 years ago today saw the release of what many people regard as the Genesis of computer games when the brand new Californian company known as Atari installed its first arcade machine (Pong) in a bar. This first model was a mashup of parts from an old TV, a coin operated washing machine, a milk carton and other hand-fabricated parts. A week later that machine started playing up and it was found to be that the coins had overflowed from the milk carton and caused the problems!

Celebrate with a quick game of PONG below (requires Flash) and then read some facts about Atari over at allthingsd.com.

This cool little Flash version of Pong brought to you by the good people of  Classic Arcade Games
EDIT: I Removed it as the article is getting a little dated now and I grew tired of the ads and extra noises when I visited my own site.
