Iran cuts “Illegal” VPN workarounds to its own national internet filter

Iran Citizens have been using VPN services to get around the national filter put in place by the Iran Supreme Council of Cyberspace which says it will start “Official” and “Legal” VPN services that need access to VPN services for security reasons.

Currently sites including major international news agencies, social networks and search engines including Google, Youtube, Facebook and twitter are blocked to stop what is called inappropriate content.

This blocking of VPN services carries prosecution for users that continue to circumvent the national filter.

Iran’s history with the internet has been pretty strained with previous attempts to cut off the internet which sometimes have seen other countries offer dialup access to get around broadband filtering for news reporters and humanitarian organizations.
